Player Review: Kevin Alcántara

Player Review: Kevin Alcántara

By: Jacob Zanolla

Welcome to the first player review of the offseason! I, along with some of my colleagues at Ivy League Cubs, will be writing an article over every player from the 2024 Chicago Cubs.

Kevin Alcantara was acquired in 2021 for Anthony Rizzo and has quickly become one of the best prospects in the Cubs system. His nickname is “The Jaguar,” a fitting mantra for his exciting style of play. He’s fast, a great fielder, and has elite power.

In the minor leagues Alcantara had a .781 OPS with 14 home runs and 61 runs batted in. He made the jump from AA to AAA in early August, and continued to do very well offensively. His wRC+ dropped one point, with an OPS increase of 98 points. The dead ball in AA has been discussed a lot this season, and this is another perfect example.

Fangraphs has the center fielder leading the way in terms of Cubs prospects, ranked 27th overall in all of baseball. He got a few games in Chicago to finish off the season, with one hit and one run in three games.

Player Grade: N/A

Due to his lack of major league time this season, giving him a certain grade seemed tough, as I didn’t want to take away from the great minor league season he had. While he didn’t do much in the three games he appeared in, I’m glad he got to experience what it’s like to be in the pros.
