Could Owen Caissie Finish the Season In Chicago?

Could Owen Caissie Finish the Season In Chicago?

By: Jacob Zanolla

As Marty McFly says when watching “The Honeymooners” in Back to the Future, “Hey, Hey, I’ve seen this one. I’ve seen this one this is a classic!” (Best movie ever but that’s a discussion for another time)

The Cubs lost, again. The bullpen blew a save, again. In a series of frustrating losses, we can just add this to the growing pile. The Cubs are eliminated from the playoffs, whether the numbers say that or not. I discussed shutting Steele down for the rest of the year, which seems like the most logical option for him moving forward.

With this year being a wash, promoting a top prospect makes a lot of sense. Matt Shaw will most likely stay in Iowa for the rest of the season, but a starting role in 2025 for Shaw would not be shocking, especially with Nico Hoerner’s future all but certain. Hoerner has been doing well lately, with a .308 average in September. Since he’s heated up, continuing to start him in order to increase his trade value seems wise.

Owen Caissie has continued to rake in Iowa, and prove he is ready for the next level. Caissie was rumored to be the September Call-Up for the Cubs, but that spot went to Miles Mastrobuoni when the front office decided there weren’t enough at-bats for Caissie on the major league roster.

So far in September, Caissie has a .983 OPS and .412 wOBA, with three home runs in 11 games. The strikeouts continue to be an issue, with the strikeout rate sitting at 26.5%. He’s proven that the bat is there at the Triple-A level, so giving him some experience with the major league team is a no-brainer.

Caissie didn’t play on Saturday night as the Iowa Cubs 7-2 victory over Louisville, which leads me to believe a promotion on Monday, when the Cubs return to Wrigley for the last home stand of the year, is quite likely. While nothing is confirmed, the signs are pointing towards the left-handed power bat getting a quick look at the major league life before the Cubs pack it up and get ready for another long offseason.
