Tommy Birch of the Des Moines register dropped some big news this morning, announcing that top pitching prospect Cade Horton is on his way to Triple-A Iowa!
Horton has been dominant in Double-A Tennesee, with a 1.25 ERA in 10 regular season starts. This season he’s started four games, with a 1.10 ERA and 0.92 WHIP. In 16 innings so far this year, he has 18 strikeouts, allowing only two walks. It’s clear that he was dominating the Double-A competition, so Iowa makes a lot of sense for his development.
The assumption is that Cade Horton will make his Iowa debut on Thursday, one day after Justin Steele makes a rehab start on his road to recovery. Horton will spend a few weeks in Iowa at minimum, but I wouldn’t be shocked if we see him up by the end of May. The Cubs pitching has taken some hits, so seeing him take this next step towards Chicago is extremely exciting. Jed Hoyer won’t rush him by any means, as we’ve seen him be very patient with all of his prospects. While we don’t know for sure when he’ll be called up, it sure seems like that time is getting closer.
